Talk about a simple project. These DIY Wall Mounted Vases basically have three steps:
1. Cut Wood
2. Stain Wood
3. Attach Hardware
Bam! You are done!
Much like my Children’s Wooden Toy & Book Bin, this has the potential to be an almost entirely free project if you have some wood and stain laying around. And who doesn’t have extra empty wine bottles these days?
How to DIY Wall Mounted Vases
Overall Nominal Dimensions: 1″ x 5″ x 15″
Here is the list of tools and materials that you will need to complete these cute DIY Wall Mounted Vases. A fun option is to dress up your final mounted vases with some flowers, beads, string lights, etc!
Materials:
- Saw
- 1 x 5 Common Board
- Wood stain or paint
- Two-Hole Conduit Straps (3)
- Mounting Hardware (This 160-Piece Kit has come in handy a lot!)
- Multipurpose Screws (6)
- Drill & Drill Bit
- Level
- Glass Bottles (3)
Cut List:
- (3) 1×5 cut to 15″
Step One: Cut Wood to Size for the Wall Mounts
I used a 1×5 cut to 15″ but the size should be determined by what shape and size your glass bottle is.
You can play around with length and width until you find the size that balances your piece best. I recommend holding the glass bottle up to the wood before you cut the length to get an idea of how it will look.
Step Two: Paint or Stain The Wood for the Wall Mounts
This is fairly self-explanatory (I think!). Pick your color, and get to work!
Note: If you have never stained anything before take a peek at Step 4 of my Floating Shelves post.
Step Three: Attach The Straps to the Wall Mounts
I used 3/4″ straps. I found it easiest to bring one of my bottles with me to Home Depot and determine the size I needed. One thing that I did not account for was the straps depth to loop around the bottle and secure flush to the wood. So my straps sit about a half inch off the wood due to the rounder part of the bottle. It makes no difference visually.
Once you have your straps sized and ready to attach, you can use any screw that is shorter than your wood board. I used 1 1/2″ screws since I also needed to cover the depth of the strap not sitting flat on the wood.
I recommend getting the strap in place with the screws slightly set, insert the bottle, and then tighten the screws all the way. Otherwise you may have some difficulty getting your glass bottle to slide through.
Step Four: Mount the Vases to the Wood Boards
I was able to use a stud to hang the center wall vase, however, the other two required an anchor. Again, this 160-piece kit is something we use regularly, and we still have not run out.
I started by measuring my wall and coming up with a plan of how I wanted my three wall vases spaced. Once I did that, I simply took a pencil and a level and marked three evenly spaced holes.
Note: I find that pre-drilling pilot holes is easier. Sometimes when you try to drill directly through the board, it does not always end up exactly where you want it to. If you are only hanging one this may not be an issue, but for multiple I definitely suggest pre-drilling. Bonus….it also prevents the wood from cracking! If you do not already have a drill bit kit like this inexpensive one from Ryobi, I definitely suggest getting one. It is a life saver.
Enjoy Your New DIY Wall Mounted Vases!
