How to Create a Window Frame Seating Chart

With fall approaching, I can’t help but reminisce about our Hallowedding. This year will be four years! [Update – 6 years] Where did all that time go?
I was recently reviewing my “Rustic Wedding Guestbook” tutorial and it reminded me that I never shared my beautiful window frame seating chart!
A Unique Window Frame Seating Chart for your Upcoming Wedding
In the months leading up to my wedding I was on the lookout for an old window. Then one day, as I was driving down some back road, I spotted them! 4 windows. All in relatively good shape. Only $25.00. I tracked down the owner told him I had $20.00, and he was more than happy to let them go!
While I didn’t actually need 4 frames, we were expecting over 200 people, so it was possible that I might have needed more than one. More importantly, I wasn’t sure which window frame was going to clean up the best, so it made sense for me to just grab the lot of them.
After looking the window frames over, I simply picked the best one and got to work.
Step One: Sand and Smooth your Window Frame
For this step I used a black & decker corded sander that I had stolen from my mother, but this one from Dewalt that we now own is just as good! Between the sander and a paint scraper I was able to smooth out all the chipping paint. It is worth noting that this is also a good point to remove any hardware that may still be on your window frame!
I was outside and didn’t wear a mask, but keep in mind you may want to wear some protective gear. After all, you have no idea how old that paint might be or what kind of chemicals it may contain.
Step Two: Painting the Window Frame
For this step you have two basic options, the second of which is my go to since I hate taping.
Option 1 – Tape and Paint.
Option 2 – Skip the tape and use a razor like this one to scrape the glass after painting. [My Preference]
But it is your choice!
I continue to be amazed every time I paint anything. It is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to bring an object back to life!
I mean, look at this beauty, it is like new!
Step Three: Create a Text Guide of your Wedding Seating Chart
This is the point in the project where you may need to be a bit patient with yourself. Just keep in mind, that if you mess up you can use your handy razor to scrape the paint off and try again!
Next you are going to use a word document and identify the font that you want to use for your seating chart. I opted for a formal cursive script for the “Please Find Your Seat” pane, and a modern font for the names, but you can choose something that fits the style of your wedding!
Personally I wanted to balance the rustic farmhouse style of the window with an elegant feature like a script font.
Tip: Set the margins to the size of each window pane to help visualize how it will print.
Once you have all the names listed try doing a test print to make sure they all fit. I did adjust the sizing a few times, but once I had everything the exact way I wanted it, I printed final copies. Next, cut each page so that it will fit on the individual window panes.
Unfortunately this project was from my pre-blog life and I only captured several steps with my phone. So you will have to imagine how this process looks. Sorry!
Step Four: Add Script to the Window Panes
Now that you have your text guide ready to go, center and tape each sheet on the back of the individual window frame glass, so it faces out towards the front. I.e. you can read it looking straight through the window frame.
Using a glass pen, go frame by frame and copy the script onto the glass. I found that using a fine tipped one gave the best control. Here is a great kit that has plenty of colors to choose from, but you can find them at any craft store! Experiment with color 🙂
Take your time! And be careful not to smudge the ink.
I apologize for the distant photo, but I don’t exactly feel comfortable broadcasting the names of every single guest at our wedding.
And there you have it!
Your very own window frame seating chart. The perfect detail for your wedding, that is sure to impress your guests!
